SUMMARY
The Borris Railway Viaduct with its sixteen arches supported by soaring limestone pillars is on of Ireland’s best example of pioneering 19th. Century railway engineering. Designed by the engineer William Le Fanu (1816-1894) and built M. Talbot. The Viaduct rises to 60ft high and spans the Borris and Mountain River Valley. It was built at a cost of £20,00 and completed in 1860.
This project will see the development link the viaduct to amenities in the town and provide a safe walkways circuit through the beautiful vistas the viaduct and local roads. The Viaduct is 800 meters in length and over 50 metres above the North Leinster Heritage drive and River Mountain.
This project is designed in the hope of enhancing tourism within County Carlow
Smith Groundworks was main contractor on the project and was contracted to carry out the construction of public pathway at Borris Viaduct comprising of the conservation of the structure and providing access with guarding along the pathway, carpark facilities and all associated works. SGW worked closely on the project with quantity surveyors Aidan Nolan & Associates.
As a recreation/amenity facility, health and safety is always at the fore and we didn’t disappoint. The quality of the finish and all associated works is always to the highest standard.
